LAFIA TO HOST NORTH CENTRAL HANDBALL LEAGUE AS HFN PRESIDENT VISITS NASARAWA

In a strategic move to decentralize and aggressively develop grassroots sports, the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has officially granted the hosting rights for the upcoming North Central Handball League to Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.The significant announcement was made by the HFN President, Saidu Jubril Ojih, during a high-profile working visit to Lafia.

The delegation met with the leadership of the Nasarawa State Handball Association, led by its Acting Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Kana, the general manager of Nasarawa State Water Board, to fine-tune preparations and inspect ongoing structural developments ahead of the championship scheduled for June 2026.To mark the momentous visit, a novelty and exhibition match was held at the Lafia City Centre Square.

The event featured a vibrant display of talent, bringing together handball veterans and active players and a friendly clash between division one and premier league players. The exhibition served a dual purpose, celebrating the youth development initiatives in the state and highlighting the shift away from a “football-only” sports culture toward robust sports diversification.

Speaking during the event, HFN President Saidu Jibril expressed immense confidence in the local organizing committee, stating that the sheer enthusiasm of the players and the high caliber of local sports administrators guarantee an exceptional tournament.

He used the platform to appeal to the Nasarawa State Government to expedite the upgrading of facilities and prioritize athlete welfare, transforming handball into a viable source of employment for the state’s teeming youth.In his response, the Acting Chairman of the Nasarawa State Handball Association, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Kana, assured the federation of a seamless and world-class hosting experience.

He noted that the association has already pooled resources to distribute critical equipment, including jerseys, handball canvas shoes, and balls, to grassroots teams to cushion immediate needs.The upcoming North Central Handball League in Lafia will feature intense regional competition from seven entities within the zone, comprising teams from Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, and the FCT, Abuja.
